When you choose to create health, you don't choose to give up your social life -- and you shouldn't! With so many summer parties, BBQs, get-togethers and potlucks, healthy choices are not always easily available without some prior planning. Planning ahead can put you ahead of the game and leave you feeling satisfied.
Here are five fantastic tips to survive your social soirees:
- Bring a healthy dish to share. Whether it's a potluck or not, people never groan about a generous guest.
- Eat a healthy snack before you go. Hunger can be a dangerous monster waiting to sabotage your success. Avoiding hunger amongst a bountiful feast is key.
- Drink lots of water - before and during your event. Your body will mistake thirst for hunger if you're not properly hydrated. You should drink half your body weight in ounces of pure water every day.
- Pack a snack in your pocket. Snack-sized ziplocks are your friends, ladies and gentlemen. Almonds are an excellent choice because they won't melt in your pocket.
- Share your healthy outlook with your host. Ask about the planned menu and determine whether there will be foods at the party that will align with your health goals. If there aren't pre-planned healthy options, offer to bring your own food to throw on the grill. I recognize this may be outside a lot of people's comfort zones, but it has yet to fail me. This idea actually came from one of my friends bringing food to one of my bar-b-ques a few years ago. I was happy to oblige. In fact, I thought it was such a great idea, I wanted to share it here.
