One serving per meal. (Yep, it's that simple.)

When you dish-up your meals, do you go back for a second serving?  That is one of the worst things you can do to yourself.  If you put the appropriate portions on your plate the first time, aren't you sabotaging that porportion and balance when you add servings once your plate is emptied?  If your plate was properly balanced and you still feel hungry, you may be dehydrated.  Drink a large glass of water (or two).  If that isn't satisfying, your brain is probably reacting to its expectation for second helpings.  Ignore it and find something else to do (like an after-dinner walk, a board game with the kids, or even dishes).

Here are some other ways to avoid the temptation of second servings:

1.  Be very careful to only prepare enough for one serving for everyone.  Plan ahead if you have kids who are still hungry after a small portion.  If they are growing, make them extra vegetables.

2. Dish-up everyone's food and put all the leftover food away before you eat your meal.  Throw dishes in the sink and wash them later.  Putting the food away takes just a few minutes. Ask the kids to set the table while you're putting the food away and you'll all finish about the same time.

Remember, you are not going to starve without a second helping.
